UNEP's water management programmes
• The Global Programme of Action (promotes the integrated management of river basins and coastal zones in order to protect the marine environment from land-based sources of pollution);
• The International Coral Reef Action Network (facilitates the conservation and sustainable management of coral reefs worldwide);
• Freshwater Assessment (assessment of world`s freshwater and coastal/marine water resources in an integrated manner);
• International Waters (in cooperation with Global Environment Facility works to reverse the degradation of International shared seas and river basins);
UNEP
UNEP works with governments, the private sector and civil society to protect water resources worldwide. UNEP promotes dialogue and cooperation among stakeholders, the exchange of best practices and success stories, the transfer of knowledge and technology, and the establishment of demonstration projects. It supports assessments and developing institutional and legal capacity.
In recent years UNEP has significantly revised its Water Policy and Strategy in order to address new and emerging challenges in water resources management.
UNEP Water Policy and Strategy has a target to facilitate a coordinated and effective implementation of UNEP mandated freshwater functions. Water Policy and Strategy of UNEP aims at contributing to environmental sustainability in the management of all water resources. It utilizes integrated ecosystems approaches to contribute to the internationally agreed targets and goals relevant to water and socio-economic development.
