H1N1

FilipDavid's picture

I was thinking something. Since this flu has appeared doctors constantly talk about hygiene, about that how often we have to wash our hands... Some friends of mine who washed hands very rarely they do that now frequently. If its so, lot of people do that more often then before, which means bigger spending of water. What do you think about that?

We can not abandon cleaning to save water. I mean, we can use less water in the shower or when we wash our hands but we can not abandon cleaning habits to save water.

Can H1N1 be prevented if the

Can H1N1 be prevented if the H1N1 flu vaccine is not readily available?

Although vaccination is the best way to "prevent" H1N1, currently (November 2009), there is not enough available for everyone who wants or needs H1N1 vaccination. Until H1N1 vaccine supplies meet demand, there are some things people can do to try and prevent infection. Without vaccination, the best strategy is to not allow H1N1 virus to contact a person's mucus membranes because if the virus does not reach cells in which it can grow, it cannot cause infection. Quarantining H1N1-infected people is an extreme measure that may work in some instances (for example, China uses this method), but even with quarantining, the virus may still spread by people who have minimal or no symptoms.

Why is swine flu (H1N1) now

Why is swine flu (H1N1) now infecting humans?

Many researchers now consider that two main series of events can lead to swine flu (and also avian or bird flu) becoming a major cause for influenza illness in humans.

First, the influenza viruses (types A, B, C) are enveloped RNA viruses with a segmented genome; this means the viral RNA genetic code is not a single strand of RNA but exists as eight different RNA segments in the influenza viruses. A human (or bird) influenza virus can infect a pig respiratory cell at the same time as a swine influenza virus; some of the replicating RNA strands from the human virus can get mistakenly enclosed inside the enveloped swine influenza virus. For example, one cell could contain eight swine flu and eight human flu RNA segments. The total number of RNA types in one cell would be 16; four swine and four human flu RNA segments could be incorporated into one particle, making a viable eight RNA segmented flu virus from the 16 available segment types. Various combinations of RNA segments can result in a new subtype of virus (known as antigenic shift) that may have the ability to preferentially infect humans but still show characteristics unique to the swine influenza virus..

What is swine flu (novel H1N1

What is swine flu (novel H1N1 influenza A swine flu)?

Swine flu (swine influenza) is a respiratory disease caused by viruses (influenza viruses) that infect the respiratory tract of pigs and result in nasal secretions, a barking-like cough, decreased appetite, and listless behavior. Swine flu produces most of the same symptoms in pigs as human flu produces in people. Swine flu can last about one to two weeks in pigs that survive. Swine influenza virus was first isolated from pigs in 1930 in the U.S. and has been recognized by pork producers and veterinarians to cause infections in pigs worldwide. In a number of instances, people have developed the swine flu infection when they are closely associated with pigs (for example, farmers, pork processors), and likewise, pig populations have occasionally been infected with the human flu infection. In most instances, the cross-species infections (swine virus to man; human flu virus to pigs) have remained in local areas and have not caused national or worldwide infections in either pigs or humans.

Our hygiene first

I believe that we should first care about us because it is important to be fine. I dont think that the waste of water because of the wash of our hands is so huge. There are other more important and tragic causes!

Serena's picture
Effective Hygiene

Of course hygiene is very important to be healthy. But hygiene does not mean to use water more than needed. We should not exaggerate washing hands for minutes and waste water for nonsense. We should be conscious at hygienic conditions and use less soap and less water with effective cleaning.

Sorry but..

Maybe in your country your Health department say that is not so dangerous, but in my country all days someone say that is very dangerous, that we must take preventive measures, we should clean our hands and all that only for a disease that only kill people who have Respiratory problems or other kind of problems.

swine flu. i hate all the fuss about it. but, i think that washing hands isn't a waste of water, even if you wash them regularly. hygiene is very important and vastly contributes to good health.

@ guti fashion

Nobody said that it was SOoooo dangerous but it's dangerous enough. I am sure that healthy people who catch this special flu have nothing to worry about. They just need to be precautious and immuno-resistant which means that they must eat well, sleep well and do not worry. For a girl I knew, 19 years old, at her second year of University it didn't happen that way. She had a cardiological problem and without this flu she could certainly live more.

Of course is very important to wash hands .. And it really is an essential part of good hygiene .. But no one we can not guarantee that we will hand washing prevent propagation flu .. Should regularly wash their hands .. But, we should not exaggerate and monitor them every 5 minutes just to preserve the flu ..

Why take an injection? If you do not take it: Well, maybe you don't get sick of the flu, so you do not need it .. And if you get sick, well you just are not lucky .. And if you take it: maybe you die, but you may not be anything .. Anyway, risk, and in both cases there is a possibility to die, but also to survive .. you choose..

water needed for hygiene; have caution about the flu

Hi!
I've already made myself that question: does hand washing compensate the amount of water used? I believe it does. Considering H1N1 or not, the true is that HYGIENE IS REALLY IMPORTANT, it's one of the most important causes of the difference in health between developed and developing nations. Washing hands is (one of) the most important hygiene actions.

Besides, the amount used in hand washing is much less than garden watering, toilet flush,..., uses that can be reduced without much negative consequences.

About the flu, I think there is a lot of PANIC. The media have emphasysed this issue too much since the start. The consequences of the panic will perhaps be greater than the ones of the illness in itself. More people die because of normal flu than because of this one. Probably it's all just a strategy for pharmaceutical companies to make a lot of money by Tamiflu and vaccines. And I don't know if the vaccines, specially in Portugal, are safe. Here they are giving a vaccine that was dispproved in America to everyone.

I mean it is more hygienic but this water you spend on washing your hands could be the crowd that could save lifes in developed countries. Ok, there are people dying because of the injection, but look how many people died because of H1N1. I am immunized and it does not happen anything. Old people, pregnant women and young children are more frail. It is better to take the risk and suffer the side effects than to have H1N1 and die,
That is why I think it is better for them to be immunized.

Andjela's picture

yeah,I have heard that too...Well,the best solution would be to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables that contain a lot of vitamins, and to wash your hands regulary.

no injection..

I think the injections are not the best solution ... In Serbia, nearly 40 people died because of the injections .. of course that the media provided another reason: they died from ordinary flu! is it possible? I think that injection is not the best way to protect from infection .. My grandmother says that the best remedy is garlic .. sounds ridiculous, but it might help ..

Lini1991's picture
Immunisation?!

Another alternative to be healthy not to waste too much water and not to be infected is immunization. An injection and you are immune of H1N1.

It won't be a problem

Actually this reason will be good, because I am washing my hands often than normally. So it's a cheap way to be hygenic. For example, I think, if a person get sick, he or she will use more water than washing hands 10 times a day. So it doesn't means bigger spending of water, and maybe it's t best way to care healt.

H1N1

I heard that more people dies because they have normal flu than people having h1n1.
But no one would write articles about people who dies because of normal flu.
I think, the danger of being ill is not because of "dirty" hands, but often because of airborne infection.
If you sneeze you have to wash hands. I think that's normal, too. Actually, you should be clean as always, but I think, people should not exaggerate so much and wash their hands more than usual.

Less water on washing hands

in order not to spent a lot of water on washing our hands we could use cleaning gels. They are not always cheap but very effective. Such a measure will stop the virus from spreding and reduce the number of infections on a daily basis. We could eat a lot of fruit in order to make our immmune system stronger.

We should wash our hands

We should wash our hands everytime before we start to eat and all the time, but scientist create antibactereal gel which you should not wash with water after you put it on your hands, so I'm thinking that is good, because we are not wasting so much water.

Really think about hygiene!

I am a person who really thinks about hygiene! I try everything to be fine! Even, lie I have some allergies from dust and clean my room often!
As to arms, to them I am more strict! If I feel them dirty, I wash them! Before and after each meal, after coming home, because the dust is around the town! Before the use of technology, especially computer because the keyboard can be damaged by the pent-up dirt!

I can't be deprive of all of this, because I am that kind of person! I really rely on good hygiene!

Even water is not enough for me! If there is no soap for cleaning, it's not enough! If there is no soap, it have no meaning to wash my arms and I use wet wipes! Especially in school when we grope every kind of things, standing in a small room full of 27 people! Textbooks, ranks, pens, blackboard, dust! I often go to the sink and I'm happy when they put soap, because there are cases where there is none!

Busraislek's picture
how to wash

I think the problem is not about washing hands. The problem is the way we wash it.I mean doctors say "Wash your hands at least for 20 seconds" but it doesn't mean "Don't turn the tap off for 20 seconds".We have to be careful about wasting.

Oh, H1N1 has the principle of "normal flu" it is just a campaign... and totally unimportant fuss about swine flu

i think,it's better to spend the water these days, when we really need it,until this virus gets lost.and after that we should be careful with the water and try to save as much water as we had spent before!

Lotta's picture
Hooray for the flu!

The problem with this new disease is not the per cent of people dying, but it's the fact who's dying. Young people, not so easily affected by seasonal flu. The swine flu is a bit more infectious. That's what's all the fuss is about. People overreact, obviously, that's been done before (SARS, bird flu, etc).

One thing I am grateful to this new virus for is the wash-your-hands campaign. We should wash our hands before eating, not because of this one epidemic, but to prevent other "everyday"-viruses to attack us. I was always taught in the kindergarten to wash my hands before eating. And I always did.

In our school, for example, nobody used to wash their hands. They now do. I believe they will continue even after the campaign. It will become a habit, a good one. We should take care or our health, the amount of water spent on that is so small. It's not a waste, it's for a good cause. We should limit the water we waste, not the water we need.

Though, I do not think washing hands will save anyone from getting the flu. That's hardly ever the way to catch the virus (when someone ill sneezes and covers it with your hand instead or his/hers, it might actually be a good idea to wash your hands though).

So wash your hands and think about all the expenses saved just because doctors won't have to treat you for something you've caught this way. Imagine all the wells you can build this way to Africa. =D

little one's picture
:(hate H1N1):

Of course,i'm not telling that we have to keep our hands in water the whole day,but it would be fine for our health just to wash them as repeatedly as we can.

I totally agree with all of

I totally agree with all of you who said it is just a trick with swine flu. It is flu, a flu which is there every year (except originator, of course...) the same percentage of people dying. But you will not read in the papers what kind of other ilnesses this people had, their conditions... nothing. And this is how panic arises.
And some people even say this vaccines are even worse, that they make people die. Yes, hopefully it is just a stupid joke. And the attention to the swine flue especially in the times of financial crisis... isn´t it exaggerated?
But back to water. We do need wash our hand, as I said before, no matter of what ilness is there. It is just hygiene. It is a question of must, not a want... And as someone said something about the gels, soaps that don´t need water... ehm, ok.. but what will this things do with e.g. mug on your hands? with dirt?
It is important to realise that water is there for usage... we can use water.. but we have to use it in a REASONABLE way. That is important.
