Tv is good or bad ???

stylianos's picture

What is television? The dictionary defines it as the transmission of visual images of moving and stationary objects, generally with accompanying sound, as electromagnetic waves and the reconversion of received waves into visual images. However in reality television is one mindless commercial after another. It is a constant barrage of consumer messages telling me what I want. Often television is unnecessary noise. Most importantly television is not as friendly and harmless as it seems. The number of negative problems directly linked to television far out weighs the positive rewards. Caught in our own addiction people often wonder what is so bad about it. Television has negative consequences on society, health, family and it is an addiction, however, there are some things about it that are not bad. Television exposes children to inappropriate language. So many children watch television unsupervised and pick up these words at young ages and start using them in public. Violence is another thing television viewers are overly exposed to. Viewers become desensitized to violence by watching it over and over on their television screen. Television is extremely graphic in it's portraying of sex, drugs and many other negative conotations.

please tell me your opinion

I used to watch television a

I used to watch television a lot, but now I don't have time for it. And I think that from television you can't learn new things-maybe from Discovery or Animal planet you can, but it still waste of time to watch it all day. Television is not good for our vision and some people can be addicted to it.

Tv is not good for our vision and people can be addicted to it!!! People need to spend more time in nature and not wasting on television.
But tv also can bring us some new, and important information.

We think that the best is to use Tv a little bit :)

TV is not good for health

If you don't watch TV all the time long. IT's ok, I mean, news are important, e.g. And some other stuff are also good for entertainment. But too much is just no good for your health.

Television

I agree with you. TV used to be about a family sitting together and seeing the news. Now it's mostly about sex, fiction, crime and entertainment. I have english and german tv,( i live in london), and on the English tv i think they handled shows and movies with explict scenes better than in germany. swearwords are only viewed after 9 and movies over 15 are encrypted until 8. in germany there are pornos running on nearly every channels, movies with gun fights from 7. Tv is good for news and funny shows but not for pornography, violence, sex and drug use.

Most important of all, it

Most important of all, it unites people. We have the opportunity to watch what is happening at any place of the world the moment we want to. Our planet becomes s big village. We learn about new things, meet new cultures and new people. We also have the chance to know who are governing us, how they behave and speak, because they appear on TV.

Check the TV listings and program reviews ahead of time for programs your family can watch together (i.e., developmentally appropriate and nonviolent programs that reinforce your family's values). Choose shows that foster interest and learning in hobbies and education (reading, science, etc.)

An image or a sound can

An image or a sound can affect us more than something written, because it "bypasses" our judgement and targets our feelings, our soul. In this way, we oftenn cannot judge what is presented to us, we just accept it! As a result, we become "passive receivers" of what we watch and we can be manipulated by those controling the various TV programmes. This danger does not exist, for example, when we read a book.

True, now television has become more powerful l0'arma global influence as thousands of people worldwide and as new development and the speed of the modern world allow almost instantaneous communication, the tv should be tested as informative and educational purpose.

My opinion

Television is good for some stuff, but mass media are so bad for a lot of reasons , for example informations or ideas or other negative conotations...the situation's getting worse.

The power of image

There is a grave danger we have to face when turning on our TV:
TV uses images and sounds to transmit a message. This danger does not exist, for example, when we read a book.

right

you are right .

and also the image has even more power on television because the light of every image helps what you said , that it "hits" at our feelings or soul...

both bad and good

i believe that television can be both good and bad.

it is all up to how you use it .

if there is a good parent control children have to be affraid of nothing.

there are some very educational programs on tv and also a lot which are low quality...

we must be realized citizens and choose what we want to watch on tv... (this way we can protect our selves...)

agree!!

This is what i also think about television...
It is up to our hand to change chanel and choose one which provides us with useful information...There are many chanels like that.
We should not just put the blame on television because we force the channels of low quality to continue that when we watch them!

I agree!!

TV does have advantages. Most important of all, it unites people. We have the opportunity to watch what is happening at any place of the world the moment we want to. Our planet becomes s big village. We learn about new things, meet new cultures and new people. We also have the chance to know who are governing us, how they behave and speak, because they appear on TV.
Appart from that, TV can also be a way to entertain ourselves, and also learn a lot. There are various nice programmes we can watch. We choose!!

Teaching Good TV Habits ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Here are some practical ways to make TV-viewing more productive in your home:

Limit the number of TV-watching hours

Try a weekday ban

Check the TV listings and program reviews ahead of time for programs your family can watch together (i.e., developmentally appropriate and nonviolent programs that reinforce your family's values). Choose shows that foster interest and learning in hobbies and education (reading, science, etc.).

Talk to other parents, your doctor, and teachers about their TV-watching policies and kid-friendly programs they'd recommend.

and remember

Watch TV WITH your FAMILY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How tv effects to children

Violence
To give you perspective on just how much violence kids see on TV, consider this: The average American child will witness 200,000 violent acts on television by age 18. Kids may become desensitized to violence and more aggressive. TV violence sometimes begs for imitation because violence is often promoted as a fun and effective way to get what you want.

Risky Behaviors
TV is full of programs and commercials that depict risky behaviors such as sex and substance abuse as cool, fun, and exciting. And often, there's no discussion about the consequences of drinking alcohol, doing drugs, smoking cigarettes, and having premarital sex.

Obesity
Health experts have long linked excessive TV-watching to obesity — a significant health problem today. While watching TV, kids are inactive and tend to snack. They're also bombarded with ads that encourage them to eat unhealthy foods such as potato chips and empty-calorie soft drinks that often become preferred snack foods.

Commercials
Under the age of 8 years, most kids don't understand that commercials are for selling a product. Children 6 years and under are unable to distinguish program content from commercials, especially if their favorite character is promoting the product. Even older kids may need to be reminded of the purpose advertising.

maria gavri's picture
Teenagers

Television also affects teenagers who they are influenced by the models and whatever television presents. Many girls and not only are trying to look like ther favorite tv model. As a result, they become extremely thin and they are sick...this is called anorexia.

stylianos's picture
how tv affect to children

Most kids plug into the world of television long before they enter school.

two-thirds of infants and toddlers watch a screen an average of 2 hours a day
kids under age 6 watch an average of about 2 hours of screen media a day, primarily TV and videos or DVDs
kids and teens 8 to 18 years spend nearly 4 hours a day in front of a TV screen and almost 2 additional hours on the computer (outside of schoolwork) and playing video games

But despite its advantages, too much television can be detrimental:

Children who consistently spend more than 4 hours per day watching TV are more likely to be overweight.
Kids who view violent acts are more likely to show aggressive behavior but also fear that the world is scary and that something bad will happen to them.
TV characters often depict risky behaviors, such as smoking and drinking, and also reinforce gender-role and racial stereotypes.

We need media literacy

We discussed this in last years Parliament. What we need is media literacy, the ability to distinguish fact from fiction.
As a father of three kids i have learned that tv can be very useful if you assist in what kids watch and discuss with them what they see.
Unreflected prohibiting of tv often results in the kids going to neighbours and watching real trash there. I noticed that the friends of my kids either do not watch at all and are very eager to visit friends with tv or they watch every piece of crab they are able too. My kids like to watch certain tv shows but prefer more often just to play outside. They know they have the option and quiet a library of good movies and documentaries at their hand. Their favorite for example is not any cartoon show but National Geographic World, a TV Show created by National Geographic.

To me media literacy is the key.

intresting

hmmm...

you kids seem enough mature to understand the important thing and this is because you have learnt them too , and this is a shine of success for you as a father...

the problem is with the parents who don't really care about what their children watch...
